DEAR EVAN IN HEAVEN,

My sincerest regrets for your recent loss.

Your devoted fan,

Gillie

EVAN ALMIGHTY, the supposed sequel to BRUCE ALMIGHTY, tanked this weekend.  With a budget of over $200 million, this zoo-lander of a film, only brought in $32 million in its first weekend.  It’ll need to continue making money to a tune of $250 million (in order to cover the marketing costs too), in order to break even!  The possibility exists that Evan could ride a wave of word of mouth for a while, possibly bringing in as much as $100 million during its run; but it’s more likely that this ship will sink.  Hopefully not bringing down Steve Carell with it!

poor steve. i like him. but it’s not enough to make me go to evan almighty. i didn’t see bruce either. the previews looked like a mockery of the bible.

Wow. Mockery, eh? I don’t know. I think it’s just a flannel board on a Hollywood scale. The more I learn about Hollywood, the more I am convinced that “they” are not “out to get” Christians. Indeed, the more I learn about Hollywood, the more I am convinced that they’re just a bunch of big kids who found out a way to play “make-believe” on a large scale… with other peoples’ money.

the irony of it all looking like a mockery – which i agree, both films did/do – is that the studio behind them (universal) is being very intentional about NOT mocking, but in fact trying to woo the Christian audience. Bruce Almighty was in fact written & produced by Christians! sadly, the films don’t come off that way in the marketing. although, i gotta say – I think i can buy Morgan Freeman as God. he seems like a nice guy who still doesn’t put up with a lot of nonsense. 😉 er, something like that…. (please don’t strike me with lighting….)

And there’s ANOTHER great review HERE!
